Testing the San Diego Water

San Diego TripThe ocean is great but the drinking water is a little thick and minerally for me. Kate and I went down to San Diego last weekend with her brother Matt and his girlfriend, Sarah, to search for apartments and get things ready for our big move down there on the 5th of August. We had a lot of fun.

We camped at a little campsite in the middle of a San Diego suburb called Sweet Water and drove around the entire city looking for apartments. Luckily we’ve found one that’s accepted our applications and we will be moving in on the 5th of August. On Sunday Matt and I went to Comic-Con to see the pop-culture happenings and so Matt could scout out the prospects of pitching a comic he’s been working on. The most shocking part of Comic-Con was the number of girls/women attending, almost equal to the number of overweight balding late 20s men. I think Kate and I are going to love San Diego and we are excited to move.

DO NOT EAT HERE!

If you’re ever driving from Las Vegas to LA or San Diego and need to eat something at Baker, CA. What ever you do, DON’T EAT AT THE MAD GREEK. We got suckered in on our way down to San Diego because of the 4,000 billboards between Las Vegas and Baker advertising the place. It was very expensive and the grossest Greek food I’ve ever eaten.

I love you seven

Kate plays in creek

My little friend Fadia is five. She is from Iraq. She’s been in the US for almost two months. She learned how to say, “I love you” and was very confused when I answered “I love you too.” She paused and replied, “I love you seven.” Now she always accompanies “I love you” with a number. Isn’t English great?

Waste of Time, Waste of Money, Waste of Waste

Kate and I just moved from our apartment in Salt Lake to her parent’s house in Provo for a few weeks before we make the big move to San Diego. Every time we move I’m sadly reminded of how much junk we’ve accumulated and how much time we waste dealing with it. Cleaning out our closets and drawers revealed mounds of vaguely familiar items reminiscent of bygone years. Packing our belongings has become an archaeological excavation (except none of our discoveries are worth anything). This morning Kate and I had to move a pile of our cloths off the floor and onto the bed so we could put a dresser in the room and by the time we finished, the top of the cloths mountain was above the tree line and 15 degrees colder than at its base.

All I’m trying to say is that if we’re not careful (if I’m not careful) we will end up devoting our entire lives to the acquisition, storage, and disposal of stuff. And when we look back on our monstrously materialistic lives we will be sadned because we were to busy taking care of our things to really enjoy our family and friends, our senses, nature and learning.

Would you say that “socialized medicine” or “environmental activism” was a bigger threat to American freedom?

My sister & brother-in-law got this survey in the mail. The sad part is that it has an intended audience some of whom presumably receive it with enthusiasm. Creepy conservative enthusiasm. I am pretty sure a liberal survey could reach equal skin-crawling propaganda levels, but the Heritage Foundation sure does have an excellent slice of the market share. I would be particularly interested in the line of reasoning explaining how “Environmental Activism” threatens American Freedom. Yowsas!

Two first time 4th of Julyers

4th July!!!

4th July!!!

This 4th of July was extra special because we had a few people celebrating with us who’ve just recently immigrated to the US and were participating the Nation’s independence for the 1st time. Our sister-in-law, Chrizelle, came to the US on a spouse visa and has only been here for a few months. She and my brother, Peter, enjoyed floating the river with the Kellys, eating great food, and watching the firework show.

Our second guests were a family of refugees from Iraq that were relocated to Salt Lake City just over a month ago. They truly enjoyed celebrating with us the independence of what will soon be their very own country. We showed them all we could about 4th of July culture including potato salad, ice-cold root beer, fireworks, S’mores were a big hit, and old fashion conversing by the fire. It was a great day made extra special by our recently arrived guests.

I just hope the the United States of America will be as good to them as it has been to Kate and I.

4th July!!! 4th July!!! 4th July!!! 4th July!!!

A Frida Kahlo dollhouse

A brilliant woman has created the most amazing dollhouse ever for her daughter. This excellent creativity almost makes me want a little girl so I can make insane craft projects for her to play with. (Emphasis on the “almost.”)

French-fries, Fine Art and Curse of Crowds

Kate and her fries

Kate and I went to the SLC Art’s Festival with some friends. By far the best part of the festival was 3 sweet sweet pounds of deep fried glory. I’m so glad potatoes are vegetables. Well we went into the festival thinking it would be more of an art show then an art shopping mall, alas after the French-fries we didn’t have enough money to support any of the artisan vendors. Actually, there was some great art for sale and Kate even ran into two artisans from her home town of Hood River, OR. The only problem with the entire ordeal was the crowd…lets just say it was a giant termite mound the day before matting season. There were so many people it became impossible to actually stop and look at any of the art for fear of being trampled to death. Luckily we survived the crowd and the fries.
