"I pray every single second of my life; not on my knees but with my work. My prayer is to lift women to equality with men. Work and worship are one with me. I know there is no God of the universe made happy by my getting down on my knees and calling him 'great.'" -Susan B. Anthony

If you think that we didn´t go to the Mexican Disney on Ice.. think again.

    Mexican disney princesses

For days now we have been hearing Disney tunes blasting all around us in the neighborhood. We thought perhaps there was a Disney karaoke block party that we didn´t get invited to. Luckily, it turns out that we´re not unpopular, it´s just a huge tent set up right behind our house for Disney on Ice, Mexican style. If you suffered the great misfortune of not going to Disney on Ice while under the age of 10, I pity you. It is much like every experience involving the word “Disney”- expensive, taxing, more stressful than “fun,” but redeemingly still involves lot of larger than life characters & pyrotechnics. In the US version at least. In Mexico it involves a whole lot more.

We volunteered to take two little neighbor girls, Abish age 7 & Erica age 9 to this spectacular. After being thouroughly pressured to pay more money for better seats by what appeared to be the mexican version of carnies, we settled into our dirty bleacher section (the best thing about this section being that it saved us from being recruited by the creepy clown to participate in his tricks, one of which involved drinking urine). There was indeed a huge square of ice in the tent, and this lent some legitimacy to the event.

To give a brief summation of the two and 1/2 hour experience let´s just say it involved:

Disney princesses (Including a contortionist Little Mermaid)

    Barney on ice skates

Spiderman (doing an impressive routine of ice/acrobatics)

A 15 minute “Grease” medley complete with poodle skirts

Magic tricks with a very small pony, a very small dog & a large black box

A very convincing Mexican Harry Potter

A man skating around in circles stripping, each lap taking off a soccer jersey of a Mexican team to reveal the next & some very short spandex shorts

The whole thing was eerily like a middle-school talent show on ice. As soon as the skaters ducked under the curtain after each number they just cut the music with a large scratch & put in the next CD presumably. But, the girls we were with seemed to think that it was pretty much the best thing that had ever happened to them.

All in all, quite a worthwhile event. Long live pirated Mexican Disney on Ice!
