Protests, Blood Diamonds, and Anti-Wal Mart = Romance
We met Wed. November 16th 2005 at an anti-Wal Mart documentary that Kate hosted at BYU, called “Wal Mart, the high cost of low prices.” Neil came to the screening and we chatted a bit before the film started. We discovered that we had both been to Thailand that summer, and Neil said, “Hey, we should make Thai food some time.”
It turns out we had many mutual friends, and had attended many of the same functions but, somehow we had never met. Later we were discussing the diamond trade, and Kate mentioned a blood-diamonds poster she loved that she had procured from a friend and had up in her apt. It turns out Neil is the one who made and distributed those posters. Many similar coincidences were discovered. We wondered how we had gone so long without meeting each other.
A cross-country road-trip for Kate delayed our first date. But, when we got together we talked non-stop with lots of opinions and ambitions to share, and somehow on that date Kate wrangled herself into Neil’s planned week-long roadtrip with friends to Baja Mexico during Christmas break.
We left for the Baja on Dec. 26th and had a wonderfully fun adventure driving all the way down to Cabo San Lucas. The first night we kissed was on a beach called “Lover’s Beach” on the southernmost tip of the Baja on New Year’s eve 2005.
We had many wonderful adventures our last year at BYU, including planning a student protest against free-speech restrictions on campus rumored to be the first of its kind.
We were married on December 30, 2006. And have since spent time in Salt Lake, Chiapas, Mexico, and San Diego. We enjoy life, friends, family, conversation, and adventure.

- It was cold the day we got married.

Kate —
Thank you for dropping by Know Your Neighbor.
It’s been fun to see your website — you are so clever.
I must say I love Mexico too!
My best,
Whitney Johnson
I loved your website it’s very beautiful
Hello to the other Neil and Kate,
We think your website is AWESOME, mostly because we have the same couple name as you! Keep up the good work!
Are you the Neil and Kate that are getting married next summer? We stumbled upon your a neilandkate.com and thought it was great. We actually tried to get kateandneil.com for our wedding but someone had already taken it. We waited and waited for the URL to expire and finally got kateandneil.com a year into our marriage.
Hi,
I came across your blog surrounding your move to Mexico. I would appreciate your help.
I am looking for expats living in Mexico who would be willing to share their advice and experience with others.
You can share this information in a couple ways: write a short article or become part of our database of resident experts. If you are interested in talking by phone/in person with some of our readers, you can also choose how and how much you’re compensated — directly or indirectly in the form of a donation to the charity of your choice.
The company I work for, RedGuide, seeks to help English-speakers — mainly Americans, Canadians and Europeans — who are looking to make their full or part-time home in Mexico.
We are about to relaunch the site and aim to provide as much information as possible about moving to Mexico to enable our readers to make the best decision possible for them and their families. Not only do we have site-specific articles geared toward introducing the many locations we cover across Mexico, but also we seek to provide general content regarding visas, residency, legal issues, and costs of living.
Our site operates as an intimate portal for our readers to discover, research, and decide what Mexican cities fit their needs. We understand that moving to another country is a huge leap of faith, we aim to make it feel less scary by outlining the necessary steps. Site-specific and expert articles create intimacy and better shape Mexico and its communities for our readers.
I’m writing to you because I’d appreciate your help with the particulars surrounding just picking up and moving to Mexico. I think a first-hand account would be a piece that many restless and retired people would be eager to read.
I’m not sure if you have written such an article in the past, but it would be great to get a first-person account of the process on the site.
Please let me know if you, preferably, or an expat you know, can write an article covering whatever concerns and fears you had before moving, any preparations you made, and any surprises you encountered once in Mexico and how you handled them.
Honestly, I think it would be an interesting story from a unique perspective. The piece will better resonate with our audience if it is authored by someone who has lived through the same process they are about to experience.
I look forward to hearing from you,
Rebecca
