Neil’s reflections on our first day in our new ward…

By Kate, 16 August 2009

“This experience makes me think that Marx was right, religion is the opiate of the masses… and by that I mean the vampire trap of the masses.”

Let’s just say that our Sunday School teacher started out with a quote from Glen Beck & saying that if she could tell the government anything that she would tell them that, “global warming is a hoax… just LOOK AT THE SCIENCE!!”

It was downhill from there.

Yo ho, yo ho the sailing life’s for me…

Kate, Neil and Leo Sailing the Chesapeake

Yesterday Neil and I went sailing with our new friend (and current gracious host in DC) Leo. Other than the fact that there was virtually no wind, it was fantastic. Since I did not get any video footage of Neil steering the boat, you’ll just have to reference the above clip from “What About Bob” for his joy-factor. He was as happy as a lark in a park. (Also, if you look closely in the above photo you will note that I am wearing actual, active fit-overs. It’s come to that folks. It’s come to that.)

Our seaworthy craft was the Gypsy Lady.

Kate, Neil and Leo Sailing the Chesapeake

We hopped out of the boat for some chillaxin’ in the Chesapeake. We have decided to give up all of our silly idealistic ambitions and be as rich as possible and own as many boats as we can in life. Not really… but, Neil is now trying to convince me that we should purchase and live in a boat instead of renting an apartment. This he sees as a legitimate option, even in DC where the water freezes over in the winter time.

Luckily, I am sane, and we will not be living in a boat any time soon.

GUESS WHAT?????!!!?????

Ransom Reunion

No, I am not pregnant.

(THE FOLLOWING IS ABSOLUTELY TRUE)

We have found a real place to live very close to my campus. It is also very cheap rent for the area.

The only catch is that we will be in charge of several rescued cats who will be living with us in the apartment. Below is photographic proof for those who may not believe me.

Cat Lady Kate

You may notice that the kitten is desperately trying to escape my loving embrace. Apparently I still need to work on my “Cat Whisperer” skills. All in good time, all in good time.

So, farewell New York. You gave me:

Dinner with Friends
Beautiful views.

Jim and Kate on a Bike Ride
Bike rides across the Brooklyn Bridge.

RevBilly

The chance to meet Reverend Billy.

Kate, Jake and Jill at a Freak Show

Real freak shows.

But, DC has already offered me friends with a yacht and a pathway to becoming a real-live “cat lady.”
Viva the District of Columbia!

“It ain’t no Georgetown, but it’s aaiiiight.”

By Kate, 12 August 2009

Hello internet! We need your help. If you know anyone in the D.C. area that would want to rent us an apartment/let us live in their garage in trade for slave labor, contact them. Who could say no to faces like these?

We have been searching for apartments incessantly, but so far… no luck. Today we looked at one roach-infested apartment in a sketchy neighborhood. When asked, “How safe is this area?,” the manager replied, “it ain’t no Georgetown, but it’s aaiiiight.” I was a little taken-aback by his lack of sales technique, but I appreciated his candor. Another man showing us a different unit said, when asked the same question, “compared to what?” Neil then had to narrow the question and ask if there had recently been any break-ins in that particular unit. As luck would have it, there have not.

As you can see, we have very low standards. And, though we are homeless, we are not hope-less! Send us your good-luck vibes via the world-wide web!

Tenesse is the place for me

By Neil, 2 August 2009

Pueblo Taos was awesome. We ended up with 1/4 a bushels of chili peppers. We strung up most of them and have been drying them in the windshield of the Jeep. The Land Institute was great. We had a fine tour. Perennials rock! We did the Cahokia Mounds in St. Louis, the Mammoth Caves in Kentucky and are currently stopped at Micky D’s for free internet before finding a camp spot in the Smokey Mountains for tonight! Yeah UNESCO World Heritage site road trip 2009!

Provo to Mesa Verde now onto Pueblo Taos

By Neil, 29 July 2009

We made it to Mesa Verde this morning after sleeping off the side of the road somewhere in Colorado. We had a lovely and short visit to Mesa Verde and are now working our way to Taos. The place will be closed by the time we arrive. We will try and go as early as possible in the morning so we can get to the Land Institute.

You’re lucky we don’t live in Erie, PA.

By Kate, 28 July 2009

If we lived in Erie, PA, this blog would be dedicated to 100% Lily paparazzi. My little niece Lily is the absolute greatest toddler, ever.  (I am saying this as a purely unbiased observer, of course). If you don’t believe me, please watch the following:

This weekend she and her mom Anne surprised us in Utah (likely mostly planned by Anne, I’m guessing ;) ). It was fantastic to see them. We had some great times.

And since no one is too small to be forced to do chores by my dad… we put her to work mopping.

We were also able to go to our friend’s Chris & Cherie’s wedding. It was perfect for them. The sealing was wonderful. I’ve never seen a happier couple, even at my own wedding. I mean, these kids were HAPPY! It was fantastic. Pamy and I sang in their program. We were outshone only by the belly dancer, magic show and tap dance numbers. ;)

Problems in the Blogosphere

By Neil, 23 July 2009

Sorry the blog was down. I tried updating the blog on a crappy internet connection and ended up frying my administration files. Everything seems to be working now, through.

P.S. Kate and I are in Utah. So give us a call if you are in town. We will be here until Sunday evening.

Rebranding

By Neil, 30 June 2009

Kate and I are once again changing our blog theme. We hope it will allow for easy navigation.

Well I’m off to a fish hatchery to see some New York native frogs.

8:00 PM – Update!

I went to a fish hatchery about an hour from our place and saw many native New Yorker frogs, turtles and fish. Here are two shots: a two headed six legged turtle and another larger one headed four legged turtle.
