The 10 Canoes and the lessons we learn

By Neil, 16 December 2007

It seems that every time Kate and I go into a movie rental store we end up with the strangest of DVD titles. For example we went to Hollywood Video last night to rent an Indian Jones flick because the Salt Lake City Library’s copy was checked out. We found a copy of the Temple of Doom and Raiders of the Lost Ark, one of which I had in my hand as I walked toward the register. Yet again, I let my eyes wander. Wander right to a shelf with a copy of Ten Canoes peacefully waiting for someone to pick it up. Well I did, decided it looked interesting, swapped it with Indian Jones, and rented it.

In only tell you this story because it happens every time Kate and I rent a movie. We never get what we intended to rent and always end up renting an ultra strange or ultra depressing movie either about naked aborigines or street kids in Romania. I don’t think to date we have ever taken home the intended film we went to the store to rent.

Last night’s film, Ten Canoes, was fun. I liked it a lot. But it was strange and included more than enough aboriginal nudity to satisfy even the most demanding of connoisseurs. Let’s just say it’s a film any anthologist would love (and if you are taking antho 101 you will probably see it soon). I think Kate and I are going to sign up for Netflix that way we won’t ever have to walk through another wall of screaming DVDs that all seem to say “rent me!”

BEFORE YOU WATCH THIS TRAILER I JUST WANTED TO WARN YOU EVERYONE IS NAKED 100% OF THE FILM.

Repent Ye Repent Ye the Shopocalyps is at Hand

By Neil, 14 December 2007

Saturday night Kate, Kate’s brother and father, and I went to see a movie called What Would Jesus Buy, an entertaining documentary about Reverend Billy and the Stop Shopping Gospel Choir. Reverend Billy believes the US has lost its soul to consumerism and he and his rag-tag choir are hitting the streets to get Americans to stop shopping during the holiday season. The movie is absolutely amazing, fun, and inspiring. At one point Reverend Billy and the Stop Shopping Gospel Choir commandeer a stage in Minnesota’s Mall of America and sign anti-consumerist tunes until the mall police expel them. Now that’s entertainment.

This holiday season everyone should see What Would Jesus Buy.

Musical Uncle Santa Snowglobe

By Kate, 3 December 2007

Uncle Santa

You read that right. It really does exist, the Musical Uncle Santa Snowglobe was won fair and square by Neil and I at a Christmas Curry party we went to this weekend. As you can see from the picture, it is much like your average Santa snowglobe, with the glaring irregularity that this Santa clearly favors kiddies born in the US of A. From the picture you cannot however, see that the globe produces the tune “God Bless America.”

This item is not a gag. It is a legitimately marketed product that was purchased, donated to a charity auction, and brought to us by fate’s loving delivery. While it presents many conundrums, the principal one for us is whether to put it up at Christmastime or for Independence Day.

And, that’s right folks, just as you might expect it’s Made in China.

Unsanitary ol’ love

By Kate, 23 November 2007

We went to see the film Stardust with my little cousins yesterday after our feast. At the dollar movies, the crowd only having paid $1.50 for their ticket instead of $8 or more, feels free to maintain a running commentary. Towards the end of Stardust the female protagonist, Claire Danes makes a speech about love. She assigns love a long list of adjectives by saying, “that it can be unpredictable, unexpected, uncontrollable, unbearable…” My cousin Archer, who had been covering his eyes for all of the parts of the movie he considered romantically “gushy” muttered an addition to the un-list, “unsanitary.”

Good ol’ unsanitary love. Archer is wise beyond his years.

If you think that we didn´t go to the Mexican Disney on Ice.. think again.

By Kate, 5 June 2007

Mexican disney princesses

For days now we have been hearing Disney tunes blasting all around us in the neighborhood. We thought perhaps there was a Disney karaoke block party that we didn´t get invited to. Luckily, it turns out that we´re not unpopular, it´s just a huge tent set up right behind our house for Disney on Ice, Mexican style. If you suffered the great misfortune of not going to Disney on Ice while under the age of 10, I pity you. It is much like every experience involving the word “Disney”- expensive, taxing, more stressful than “fun,” but redeemingly still involves lot of larger than life characters & pyrotechnics. In the US version at least. In Mexico it involves a whole lot more.

Back by popular Demand, Another Guat Dance Video

By Neil, 19 May 2007

All is well. We just got the fast internet installed after a killer day talking to 15 internet techs, 5 phone techs, an actually guy coming out to and fixing the phone lines. Anyway after 6 hours of yelling on the phone and at each other (I am sure Kate will mention this in her blog) we got it working. It is still not that fast but man does it beat dial up. Well enjoy the vid.

The Guatemalan Dance Video

Well here it is, our first attempt at a video. This video was taken at a festival in a small town outside of Xela, Guatemala about a week and a half ago.

I am trying to get more of the videos on our YouTube account, so be sure to check back often.

Mexico things are going well. We are currently having a few friends visit for a week and it is nice to have the company. I have been working hard to get the computer systems up and running in the compound but things go much slower in Mexico than the US. Much needed high speed Internet takes up to 10 days to install once the order has been placed. So by next week we should have it. Also to add a little more adventure to our stay, the compound’s water supply has been failing all weekend and we have had to go most of the weekend without water. Not that it is hard or anything, when I lived in Kenya it was much worse, but when it comes unexpected and you are unprepared, and you need to go to the bathroom, and there is not water to flush the toilets, then things get a little uncomfortable.

We love it here, though, and are enjoying every second. We will try to get more of our videos up on YouTube as soon as we get a fast internet connection (I will try and post one more tomorrow), so be sure to check back. Also we will get a commenting engine installed this week so if you’re struggling to find a place to leave a comment don’t fret, it is on its way.

Nightime in Xela

By Kate, 4 May 2007

Neil and I have spent a lovely week in Xela, Guatemala. It`s in the North West-ish corner of the country. It’s a good 6 hour bumpy, dangerous (due to driving customs) trip. Thus, not as many touristas make it up here. Therefore, we like it a lot more than the more touristy parts. No nappy-dreaded drunkards giving us whities a bad rap.

It´s a really pretty city that looks pretty European in the central part. We have been taking classes at the Kie-Baalam Spanish school. We each have had our own private tutors for a week. It`s been a lot of studying, 5 hours a day, but it`s been really good to get back into the grammar etc. Neil has already picked up present and preterit tenses.

Si no fuese blanco, seria latino!
