Home safe and sound… and some monarch photos

By Neil, 15 March 2009

As we drove between Mazatlan and Guayamas we discovered our Mexican car insurance had expired just an hour before. Since we were unable to extend it we decided to head for the border. We crossed the US border at Nogales around 8:00 pm without incident and went to Kate’s grandparent’s house in Tucson to spend the night. They were very gracious hosts & the soft beds were very welcome after the granite-hard ones we’d experienced in cheap Mexican hotels! Saturday morning we got up late, showered, said goodbye and headed for the restaurant, El Charo. Then home to San Diego. The trip was fantastic and with 3,600 driving miles under out belt I’m extremely glad we made it home without incident.

Here’s what you’ve been waiting for:

30,000,000 monarchs and we live

Mexico trip 2009

We made it out of Mexico City without much problem and managed to get to Angangueo, a small town in Michoacan. We wanted to see the monarch butterfly colonies before they returned to Texas to lay their eggs and die. We did that and it was literally awesome. More fantastic and amazing than words, pictures or my coming documentary can tell. After lunch with our travel guide we headed to Guadalajara, where we are now. Another great city, why we live in the US I will never know. Anyway, we are safe and doing well.

Traditional Mexican Dance

If you ever get a chance come to Mexico City, it is probably one of the greatest cities in the world. Since last update we´ve, Jason and I, been running around the town looking at Diego murals, historic buildings and museums filled with ancient mind-blowing stuff. We have also eaten great food at every meal, including panini in the dark because the neighborhood lost power. Well, Kate is coming tomorrow and the terrible trio will be complete. More to come soon.

Movie Set and Jacaranda Tree Zocalo

p.s. Donna, I may be moving here permanently, this place it too great to leave! Don´t worry we are playing it extra extra safe.

Viva Mexico…Again!

Jason and I made it to Mexico City just as the sun was setting. We got onto our main road just as the sky went dark and 30 minutes later were in our hotel.

Street tacos then bed!

2032.5 miles to freedom!

By Kate, 1 March 2009

Neil and Jason set out on their journey to Mexico City today. In total the road trip will be 4, 065 miles. Turns out driving to Mexico City is approximately the same distance as DRIVING TO WASHINGTON DC, our nation’s capitol. Luckily I will only be making the return leg of the journey by car.

But, it will be worth it… I mean, who doesn’t want to vacation in a place where the  State Department issues travel warnings about? With such lovely descriptions as, “Mexican army and police confrontations with drug cartels have resembled small-unit combat, with cartels employing automatic weapons and grenades,” how can you go wrong?

Oh, Mexico

We have decided to drive to Mexico City for spring break. Yep, that’s right. We may as well just drive to Florida. Actually, Neil and Jason are driving down & I’m flying to meet them a week later (since missing law school for a week would be like missing $17,000 of classes). If you’re no fool, you’ll find a cheap ticket & join us. It’s much cheaper to fly out of Tijuana, FYI (you only have to risk your life getting across the border & to the airport). Just buy a one-way ticket & you can score a ride with us in the lap-of-luxury skunk moblie on the way back. Worth it.

A Frida Kahlo dollhouse

A brilliant woman has created the most amazing dollhouse ever for her daughter. This excellent creativity almost makes me want a little girl so I can make insane craft projects for her to play with. (Emphasis on the “almost.”)

Neil's New Phat Farm Shorts

Neil has prepared for our voyage to Cancun by buying some new shorts. The closeup view below will give you a glorious view of the brand name of these plaid wonders. Yes, that’s right… Phat Farm. That is an American clothing brand.

Wish us well on our journey. We are going with my entire immediate family. So, naturally we’ll have plenty to blog about when we return.

Immigration at its finest

The Latino Comedy Project has tons of extra-funny videos on their site. This is a parody of the movie 300. No matter what side of the immigration debate, or border, you stand on… this is hilarious.

Mexicanica, Canamerico or Americanixco?

By Neil, 7 October 2007

Tear down the wall, pack up the minutemen, and get ready to expand! Immigration has just taken a turn for the better. The solution to our current immigration problems is to unify Canada, the US and Mexico into one nation state.

Kate has posed a question for the Republican YOUTUBE debate in November.

This question has ilicited a number of enlightened and articulate commments from obviously well-educated people roaming the internet such as (these are actual quotes):

“LADY!!! WERE AMERICA NOT FREAKING MEXICO!!!!! its not our freaking concern. UGH.”-MushyPenguin

“Ah, so global Socialism is your answer. How wonderful. And who should pay for all this? Why, Americans of course. I guarantee I’ve been around the world, and seen more of it than your prepubescent, idealistic little mind has. Let’s all do away with borders, countries and individuality. We should be all one big happy planet. Grow up and open your eyes.” -Wallace1776

“Why is it the job of the United States to “improve Mexico”? What kind of globalism are you smoking?”-Sugarmonkey528

“Land mines and 50 cal machine guns…that’ll do the trick.”-mike3764

“yeah and… change those retarded glasses.”-bcmple (this was the entire quote)

“Screw Mexico, its time to focus on America!” -FatherClayton

“She even looks like a ****ing liberal activist. More U.S. citizens are killed by illegal scum every year than are killed in Iraq. The ones who do come here to work, they steal our social security numbers and burden the tax payers. Look how they run their own country, the more of them that come here, the more they are going to bring us down. Liberals don’t know how to run this country… Why have any borders at all?” -danwk7

We have been so struck by these brilliant ideas we have come up with a plan. You’re right Mushypenguin, we’re not in Mexico! But, we could be. You’re right danwk7, why have any borders at all! Our new plan for the future of North America is a gigantic conglomerate nation. Canamerico! This was people will truly have a choice. They can show their support for local political decisions by voting with their residency. This may at first, of course, iniciate a enmass migration to “Canada” since they provide “healthcare.” But, the US government would wise up. The populationless barren Mexican desert would have to entice people back with less robbing from the poor & more equitable programs (perhaps even un-corrupt elections.)

Besides, just think of the new National Anthem possibilities.

O say, can you see, we are so proudly border-free? Canamericanos, there’ll be no cry of war, no attacks to make earth shake at its core.

O Canamerico!

Our home and somewhat native land! True patriot love in all thy sons & daughters command.
