The good ship lollipop
By Kate | March 8, 2008
Despite Neil’s earnest last-ditch attempts to convince me to fly to Thailand, Mexico, Cuba and finally Calgary for medical tourism for my surgery…. I still went ahead with it in the good ol’ US of A. The tonsillectomy went well, as far as I can tell. I was out the entire time. Until they woke me up and shoved me out the door in a wheelchair. What they claimed would be 2 hours of “wake-up/recovery time” really turned out to be 25 min. They also refused to give me my tonsils back. Although the nurse denied it, I am pretty sure they are going to sell them to some company in China for research. C’est la vie.
Luckily I have a wonder-husband to encourage me to eat & drink or I would probably give that up altogether. It’s quite pesky to shove crackers down that little cauterized canyon that is my throat.
The doctor prescribed me these handy little Novocaine lollipops to numb me up. If sucking on them in the first place didn’t hurt so blasted much I’d be a dream come true.
My advice is, get your tonsils out when you’re a kid. You’re better off without ‘em.

There’s something weird about suckers in a prescription bottle. . . two things that usually don’t go together. Hope you feel better Kate!

I’m glad to see you’re well enough to blog at least! I mean, a person would have to hit a pretty hard rock bottom to neglect their lucrative website, but just sayin’. Good luck with them suckers.
I am sad that they wouldn’t give you your tonsils. I mean, come on, slam ‘em in some formaldehyde and slap ‘em in a prescription bottle (not the one with the lollipops in it). I remember feeling similarly defeated when my oral surgeon informed me that my wisdom teeth had been destroyed during the process of their removal and I would never have the wisdom teeth hemp necklace of which I had dreamed. Sometimes life is a bust!

I hope you feel better. Your tonsils are probably being used in research to determine the amount of lead a child can tolerate before a parent begins to suspect lead-induced retardation, which might lead to a costly product recall. Think of it as “fighting the good fight,” international commerce-wise.

It seems like I am always hearing about how they don’t take tonsils out anymore if they don’t truly have to. I had no idea your condition was so serious. Maybe they didn’t want you to have them back because they don’t want you to know what a close shave you really had. I’m just glad you made it through.

Again, so glad to hear the patient is recovering so well! I hope your nursing staff is fixing you delicious smoothies round the clock.
I’m with Amy on the medical souvenirs! I’d want to keep ‘em too. I’m now regretting not insisting on getting my wisdom teeth back when they removed them back in 1991! A hemp necklace would have been too cool.
