Neil's reflections on our first day in our new ward…

By , August 16, 2009 10:10 pm

“This experience makes me think that Marx was right, religion is the opiate of the masses… and by that I mean the vampire trap of the masses.”

Let’s just say that our Sunday School teacher started out with a quote from Glen Beck & saying that if she could tell the government anything that she would tell them that, “global warming is a hoax… just LOOK AT THE SCIENCE!!”

It was downhill from there.

I heard someone say this precise thing to Doug Fabrizio the other day and didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. Amazing that we all live on the same planet, yet so seldom seem to.

I don’t understand where all these people who are saying that global warming is a hoax are getting their “scientific” information from. When I read an article about James Hansen talking about how grave the situation is and then hear random people spouting off about how science has ‘debunked’ climate change, that worries me.

The fact there is actually a debate about global warming frustrated me to no end. It’s not like scientists are giving their opinion on fashion or sports. They’re trying to save the world from destruction. Even if you don’t believe everything scientists are saying, wouldn’t it be better to still be on the safe side?

You mean the residents of our nation’s capitol aren’t all enlightened, caring and intelligent human beings?

Being in the epicenter of power doesn’t imbue them with infinite wisdom and intelligence???

    Shocking!

  6. sounds like our ward in sacramento. boo. where are you guys now-a-days?

Ann, ugh… it stinks to feel so creeped out at church. We are in DC. Chevy Chase ward to be exact. To its credit, everyone in the ward (including said Sunday School teacher) was VERY nice and welcoming.

If only we could cut out the Glen Beck references, we’d be in good shape!

I received a phone call from the Bishop yesterday. He wanted to welcome us into the ward. He sounded like the nicest human alive…so maybe it’ll make up for Sunday school.

The Gospel is true despite the imperfect efforts of us human beings to live it!
